The simple pic ‘n’ mix morning routine for more happiness & productivity

morning routine, Stephanie Holland, The Freedom Philosophy

You’re probably sick to death of hearing about how important it is to have a morning routine, since everyone in the startup world, and the world in general, seems to be obsessed with it.

If you search ‘morning routine’ in Google you get dozens of SEO optimised blog posts like:

‘The morning routines of the most successful entrepreneurs’,

‘The 24 minute morning routine’,

‘How to create a success-based morning routine’,

’11 tweaks to your morning routine’,

‘7 secrets to your morning routine’…

… the list is endless.

It’s 100% true that your morning routine has the power to set you up for a brilliant, creative and productive day or exactly the opposite.

But… these posts are often so prescriptive, too long, maybe even too ‘spiritual’ and often just don’t resonate with you. And the last thing we need is more obligations that make us feel guilty when we don’t do them.

So let’s take the pressure, obligation and ‘yawn’ factor out off your ‘morning routine’.

How to use the pic ‘n’ mix morning routine

The fact is, you already have a morning routine!

Yes you do!

Whatever you do between getting up and doing your busy-work everyday is your morning routine.

When you do things a certain way, thats a ‘routine’.

When you do things a certain every day, that’s ‘routine’.

When you do things a certain way every day on autopilot, that sure as hell is a ‘routine’.

The question is…

Does your current morning routine uplift you body, mind and soul?

And do you love it so much, does it feel so sacred to you and leave you feeling refreshed, revitalised, and ready to take on ANYTHING that you might even consider it a ‘ritual’?

See, ‘routine’ just means regular. And it can get kind of boring and mundane.

But ‘ritual’ implies a sacredness, a whole different dimension of experience and an entirely different set of RESULTS too.

Routine is something you get done. Ritual is something non-negotiable that you hold as sacred because it enables transformations.

So how do you shift your morning routine into a sacred ritual?

Well.

  • It can be as long or as short as you like. There’s no time limit or expectation around it. It can be 10 minutes or 2 hours.
  • It can follow a certain formula while also being full of options and variety.
  • And it can contain any combination of things that uplift you mind, body and spirit.

The only 2  imperatives are that it does uplift you mind, body and spirit, and that you LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!

So when you’re designing & experimenting with your morning routine, you can create your own pic ’n’ mix matrix so you can experiment and keep it fun, interesting and diverse.

Simply:

  1. Set a timeframe each morning (like 30 mins) and set your alarm that much earlier
  2. Make a list of your goals for body, mind and soul
  3. List the activities that make you feel that way
  4. Pic ’n’ mix from this list every morning, or when your circumstances or scenario changes!

So for example when it comes to your….

Body – you want to detoxify, circulate and metabolise

But my specific goal is to: feel alive, vital & PRESENT in my body

And some of the ways I do that…

  • I drink hot water with lemon, turmeric & Himalayan crystal salt
  • Walk
  • Run
  • Stretch
  • Yoga
  • 20 min workout
  • Hot/ cold shower therapy
  • Nourishing breakfast

When it comes to your….

Mind – you want to prime your thoughts so they supportive, uplifting & empowered

My specific goal is to: feel awake, uplifted, inspired and motivated, like can do ANYTHING

And some of the ways I do that…

  • Brain dump [or Morning Pages per #TheArtists’sWay] – stream of consciousness for 3 pages
  • EFT [Tapping, Emotional Freedom Technique] to eliminate negative thinking
  • Ho’oponopono prayer [Forgiveness prayer to release old resentments & hurts]
  • Reading my passion, purpose and vision statements
  • Visualising myself reaching my daily, weekly, yearly goals
  • Prayer in thanks for having accomplished my daily goals
  • Reading Osho or Krishnamurti or the works of some other wise teacher

When it comes to your….

Spirit — you want to align with your own divine power, align with your creative source and tap into your innate intelligence

My specific goal is to: peaceful, calm, and completely in control of my own destiny

And some of the ways I do that…

  • Mantra meditation [using sound] for peace & creativity
  • Guided meditation for energy clearing
  • Breath work [pranayama] to tune into my stillness, activate my driving force and tune into my creativity

When you list out all the activities that align with your goal you’ll have a ton of ideas for your morning routine.

You can stick with one routine for a week or 40 days.

You can switch it around every day.

You can change it when you move to a new location or when your situation changes, like you have a different job or commute or relationship etc.

There are so many variables in life and it’s important that your morning routine can be adapted for every variable if that feels good for you!

When it comes to my morning routine I want to emphasis that I don’t do all of these things all of the time, and the activities really depend on my location.

Because I’m a traveler, I find myself in new locations all the time and I adapt my morning ritual to my environment.

So at the moment I’m in Devon, UK looking housesitting the most adorable whippets & cat, so in the morning I:

  1. Drink hot water with lemon, turmeric & Himalayan crystal salt – 2 mins
  2. Brain dump [morning pages] – 15 mins
  3. Energy clearing meditation – 10 mins
  4. Prayer – 3 mins
  5. 1 hr walk on the beach with the dogs – 1hr 30mins

It contains elements for priming body, mind and spirit and sets me up to handle better whatever comes my way each day.

I find that having a pic ’n’ mix strategy means I can always do it – there are no excuses not to.

  • If I don’t have a book with me, I don’t read. I’ll read my own goals instead.
  • If I don’t have a yoga matt with me, I’ll run or walk instead.
  • If I don’t have peace and quiet, I’ll stick my headphones in and do a guided meditation instead.

It’s literally excuse-proof!

Remember: you have a morning routine anyway, so it may as well be something that uplifts you, inspires you, empowers you and sets you up for the rest of the day.

You have a morning routine anyway. So it may as well uplift you.
